What's in a good name?

Lately, I have had names on the mind.

Names of those who I consider great dear friends, names of those I don't really know, names of those I look up to and even those names that seem to leave a bitter taste in many a mouths.

I never realized how much names mean to me until the other day.

Someone I didn't know walked up to me and said, "Oh hey, you're Kennedy's mom!" I stopped in my tracks because I almost wanted to say, "Um no....I'm Nicki." But I giggled along with her and pretended to joke along with her "Oh ya....your so-in-so's mom!"

And then I started thinking, Hmm....the name "Kennedy's mom" it just didn't have a good ring to it to me!

Because when I hear the name "Kennedy" I think:

Screaming, Crazy, Wild, Silly, "But why?" asking, Disobedient, Doesn't understand "No", Funky looking Hair , Smelly Toes, Mismatch shoes wearing, Crooked Bow pony tails, Hannah Botanna Singing, Chocolate on the face, Sucker in the mouth, Flushing veggies down the toilet, And........just a big "Lord help her!" three year old diva.......named Kennedy.

I mean......it just doesn't have such a nice ring as "Nicki".

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my youngest girly girl and she is more precious than any......any..........any.......any? Hmmm......let me get back to you on that one. ;) But ahhh...sometimes I just cringe when I hear her name! For Real!

And then, I started thinking today, "I wonder if anyone ever cringes when they hear my name?"
Proverbs 22:1 says this: "A good name is more desirable that great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold."

Ouch.

Lately, I've been surrounded by person after person who seemed to have a bitter taste left in their mouths from a certain person's name. At first I was like, "What is up with this?" But then I realized that God was teaching me a tough, tough lesson from another person's walk; a good name is worth more than anything will ever gain in this life.

Although the feelings that flow from our names may change from time to time, there is a name who has remained the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. And His name is Jesus!

I leave you with this video......if you have a second please watch it! It's powerful! Because of what His name can do, I want more of Him in my life! There is no greater name in our lives than His:

Sounds like God is speaking to you..that is a beautiful thing.
I have often wondered what certain people from the past think when my name comes to mind. I pray that I never leave anyone with a bad taste in their mouth.
And just to let you know....when I think of you...and I do...it's sweet. ;)

Nicki....I'm covered in goosebumps. What an absolutely beautiful song!!!! I forwarded the link to a lady on our music ministry team. I could envision our choir and worship team singing it as well. Something special does happen when we speak His name.

I think of an old hymn that says, "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, there's just something about that Name. Master, Savior, Jesus, like the fragrance after the rain. Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, let all heaven and earth proclaim. Kings and kingdoms will all pass away, but there's something about that Name."

In just doing a little 'net' search, I found a site that said the name Nicki comes from Hebrew meaning, "God has given". I'm so thankful He has given you to me as a 'blog friend'.

Blessings,
Joy

Hey Girl-
It is strange how some names we carry one way or another. I would never name one of my girls after one of Mike's past girlfriends. Funny how we think:) HA! Sorry I will miss you this weekend.
love ya

I like where you went with these thoughts Nicki. And how true....no name is so important as the name of Jesus!

"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

What a great post, Kennedy's Mom! :)

You crack me up.

Isn't it interesting all the other places that our identity gets caught up in besides God? I've been thinking about this too with regards to women and how they dress.

The song is beautiful, almost as beautiful as His NAME.
